No Place I Have to Be

MOVEMENT I - MORNING

Morning finds me with nothing to answer. No battle waiting. No name to defend.

The road does not call me. The sea makes no demand. Still- I wonder what lies beyond that hill. And that is reason enough.

MOVEMENT II - MOVEMENT

I can stay. I can leave. Neither one is surrender. I can build something beautiful and never ask what it becomes. I can give someone my hand without deciding where it leads. There are roads I have never walked. Songs I have never sung. People whose names I do not know yet. Good.

CHORUS

There is no place I have to be. No distant shore that waits for me. Earth beneath my feet. Wind against my skin. I do not need to know the ending to begin.

MOVEMENT III - THE WORLD

Let the mountains remain mountains. Let the ocean be too wide. I don't need to conquer either to know that I'm alive. Some doors will open. Some will close. Some hands will touch mine and let go. There is room for all of it. I have nowhere I must arrive. And an entire world in which to live.

FINAL MOVEMENT - FREE

I have carried enough to know the weight of things. Now let me carry only what I choose. A song. A memory. A hand for a while. Maybe nothing.

There is sunlight on the water. There is weather coming in. There are years I haven't met yet. Let them come without a plan.

FINAL CHORUS

There is no place I have to be. No promised land in front of me. Roots beneath my feet. Open sky above. I can stay. I can wander. I can build. I can love. Not because the darkness disappeared. Because it no longer chooses where I go.
